A Broken Blade and a Booze Bottle Empty
PostSubject: A Broken Blade and a Booze Bottle   A Broken Blade and a Booze Bottle EmptyWed Nov 02, 2016 11:52 am

It had been three years since Zakuro last visited a populated area for reasons other than to restock supplies.  Keeping a low profile when you were on the run was important after all.  Zakuro used his time of seclusion to further hone his skills as a swordsman and as a ninja.  While three years may not mean that Kiri would stop looking for him just yet, it would most likely mean he wasn't at the top of their priority list.  So, hopefully, that meant he had a bit more freedom to move around.  More recently, Zakuro had heard of a newly arisen hidden village that accepted outsiders wishing to avoid the conflicts of the other nations.  This attracted his attention enough to see for himself.  Who knows, maybe he could find a new home there.

His short black hair moving with the calm wind as he unhurriedly walked down the dirt path that would lead him to Honegakure.  A katana, lightly decorated across the the hilt and scabbard, strapped across his back, and a blue and gray hakama for clothing.  It was nearing mid day, but Zakuro had not met anyone along the road yet that day.  He continued on calmly, wondering if Honegakure had any nice bathhouses.

As Zakuro traveled, he'd begin to notice the aroma of cooked fish wafting towards him. By turning to his side he'd see a grove of trees, and beyond that he'd see a small fireplace by a river. Over the fire were about five or six large fish, all of them close to being finished cooking. Next to the fireplace, a long hammock was nestled between two trees.

With a flick of movement, a large man fell from the hammock and landed on his knees, pushing himself up in a groggy fashion. He released a long yawn as he held his silk garments close to his body. Zakuro was likely educated enough to recognize a shinobi from Suna based on the attire alone. The man had no shinobi headgear though and appeared to be unarmed. He moved to his fire and began removing the fish, beginning to gnaw on one once he was satisfied.

Zakuro was just strolling along the path when a mysterious scent passed his nose.  He stopped in his tracks, taking a few glances around and sniffing in an attempt to locate the source.  The smell was very familiar to him as it had been a common meal for him in his time on his own.  He slowly scanned his surroundings until his eyes rest upon a grove of trees.  Zakuro lazily made his way towards the trees until he saw a small campfire.  Further inspection of the area would reveal a river, a hammock, and a set of fish staked to the ground by the fire, slowly roasting.

In his curiosity, Zakuro took a few steps closer until a man spontaneously tumbled from the hammock, startling him.  Zakuro simply observed as man pushed himself up and sleepily moved over to the campfire.  He noticed the mans silk clothes in a style that was vaguely familiar to him.  During his time as a Kiri ninja, Zakuro had not had many interactions with ninja from Suna, but he knew enough to recognize their attire, even without the presence of a headband.  Confident someone from Suna would not be aware of his situation, or even figure out he was from Kiri, he took a step closer.  "Good morning"  Zakuro smoothly called.  "Mind if I join you?"

As someone spoke out, Jori perked his head up before turning around and seeing a lone man. He looked harmless enough, but in a world full of shinobi what did that mean anymore? Jori looked the man over for some time before picking up a bottle and taking a long swig. If he was about to die, he at least wanted to feel good about it.

Finally, Jori offered a spot next to the fire. "Only in exchange for your name" the man said before removing one of the fish, testing how well it was done, and offering it to Zakuro. "Still a bit hot there, don't burn your tongue. I am Jori by the way"

"Of course,"  Zakuro gave a slight bow and a calming smile, "My name is Zakuro.  A pleasure to make your acquaintance Mr. Jori."  As the skewered fish was offered to him, Zakuro went to take it with both hands.  "Thanks for the meal."  Zakuro plopped down cross legged a third of the way around the campfire to Jori's right.  He blew a bit of cold air over the sizzling fish before opening his mouth wide and 'biting' into the underbelly.  He didn't quite bite all the way down however.  He was still a shinobi in a shinobi world after all, and one had to be careful.  He waited a moment, testing the fish to see if he could taste any poison coating it before ultimately deciding it was safe and completing his bite.

The fish was cooked well, if slightly burnt, but that was just the was Zakuro liked it.  "Ahh, delicious."  Zakuro took another bite.  "The fish around here are surprisingly good."  He swallowed his mouthful.  "So, are you from around here, or a traveler like me?"  It was fairly apparent that Jori wasn't from around here, but Zakuro would feign ignorance to fish for a bit of information on the man he just met.  One couldn't be too careful after all.  Even to one so willing to share their meal with a complete stranger.

"Just Jori please, never been one for formalities, especially when I'm sitting in the dirt eating a roasted fish" Jori pointed out before gnawing on his own fish. He consumed it rather quickly, not even taking the time to notice that Zakuro was examining his fish for possible poison. Zakuro had approached Jori after all, so if this was some form of elaborate trap it had taken quite a bit to prepare. Alas, there was no poison, not even a sleeping agent amongst the fish.

Jori turned over to a small chest and opened it, allowing Zakuro to see several bottles with various labels on them. "It's rude to feed someone without also offering them a drink" Jori said before pulling out a bottle of some of his finest product. "If you have the stomach for it, I highly recommend this flavor. The first time I tried it, I felt like my stomach was in knots for days. But boy....that flavor and the smoothness was just amazing" Jori said before holding the bottle out to his guest.

"For your question, I'm a bit of both. I'm currently setting up shop in Honegakure, originally from Suna though" the man said before pulling out a second bottle and starting to drink it himself like it was water. "No idea how long I'll be here though. If business is as good as it has been, I don't see myself leaving for some time"

Zakuro made sure to watch closely as Jori opened up a strange chest until he found it full of an assortment of alcoholic beverages.  "Alright then, Jori, I will gladly accept a drink."  Zakuro smoothly took the bottle from Jori's grasp, "Though I'm afraid it's been quite a while since I had a good drink, so I'm not sure if I'm ready for too much." He finished off his fish and took a sip of his drink.  Zakuro swallowed and blinked a few times.  "Well, that went down smoothly."  He chuckled.  "You have good taste."

"Oh? What a coincidence.  I've heard some rumors about Honegakure, that they are very accepting and let almost anyone within their borders.  I was curious and decided to see for myself how a ninja village can be so open in this day and age.  And if I like it, maybe settle down myself."  Zakuro took another sip from the bottle and leaned back.  "So, Jori, why did you decide to leave Suna?"

Jori just watched with a bit of eagerness as Zakuro drank from his container. "Ah, you clearly have great taste as well. I made this myself" Jori said proudly before taking the offered bottle back and setting it away for future use. "I run a bar and restaurant up in Honegakure. Small little area, but everyone likes to have fun and get along. You'd be surprised how much a village of runaways can put down in alcohol. Thankfully my passion is making that now"

"If you're trying to gain access to Honegakure, know that it isn't that easy to gain entrance. They do quite a bit of screening in order to make sure that they don't let in bounty hunters or hunter-nin. You understand I'm sure" Jori said before downing some of his own beverage.

At the question about leaving Suna, Jori only smiled before looking back to Zakuro. "I'll tell you my story if you tell me yours"

Zakuro looked surprised at Jori.  "You made that?  That's quite amazing.  Unfortunately for me, I don't have any sort of trade skills.  All I have going for me is this."  He made a slight head bob towards the sword strung across his back and gave a chuckle.  "Either way, I'll have to make sure to drop by your restaurant when I get the chance."

When Jori mentioned the screening process for entering Honegakure Zakuro gave a bit of a nervous laugh.  "I guess they would have that wouldn't they.  It wouldn't be very smart of them if they didn't.  Though I guess that should make me feel a bit safer there then, yeah?" Zakuro laughed again, more pronounced, but still an uneasiness in his voice.  Zakuro was no bounty hunter, but the thought of revealing too much about himself to people he didn't know put him on edge.

In response to his inquiring of why Jori left Suna, Jori countered with a trade of sorts.  "I suppose that sounds fair."  Zakuro glanced nostalgically at the nearby river.  "I hail from an island far to the south.  That place, which I once called home, was in the land known well as the Bloody Mist."  Zakuro examined Jori's face, searching for some form of reaction that could indicate hostility.  The name 'Bloody Mist' tended to elicit negative responses in all forms, be it disgust, fear, or even aggression.  After a moment, Zakuro continued.  "It's been almost three years, I think, since I last saw those shores."

Zakuro was speaking calmly, as if recounting good memories, a small smile donned his face.  "I loved my village, and gave my all to fight for it," his expression immediately turned dark.  "That is, until they betrayed my family, and my trust."  A loathing hate was edging into his voice.  Zakuro reached for the blade on his back, possibly appearing to be a sign of aggression, but he made no other body movements.  He pulled on the hilt to reveal the blade on his ornate sword had a rough break about eight inches up the blade.  "This is what I have left from that place."  He examined the sword himself, seeming to forget Jori's presence for a moment.  Another moment passed as he sheathed his sword and he was back to his calm demeanor, showing a fake smile.  "So I left, and ended up here somehow.  That's the gist of it." He shrugged.  "I believe that should be satisfactory for the time being."  Zakuro looked at Jori inquisitively.  "So, your turn?"

Jori listened quietly as Zakuro went through his story. The man was relaxed, and didn't seem to show any signs or concerns when Zakuro drew his blade out. If the man wanted a fight, he'd get one, Jori just wouldn't give him the chance to use that thing if he had the chance. Thankfully, this fear was unwarranted as Zakuro moved on and asked Jori why he left Suna.

"My tale is far more boring than yours. In truth I got tired of killing people for a living" Jori explained as he poured Zakuro another drink to have while the suna shinobi spoke. "After so many years of service you start to remember the faces that really stick out. The blood, the pain...the begging" Jori added as he thought back to some of the last missions he accomplished in Suna.

"So, I decided to leave and find something else I loved. I had always been told I made a good drink, so I decided to retire from the shinobi business and open up my own bar"

As he said, Jori's story was short and simple.  Got tired of killing, huh?  Zakuro had never really thought anything special when he killed.  It was just something he was either instructed to do by his former village or what he did to survive.  At least, until the deaths affected him directly such as friends or family.  Another bit of hypocrisy he was aware of, but simply acknowledged as part of himself and wouldn't brood over it.  Zakuro took the newly poured drink offered to him with a small thank you and took a quick sip.

Upon hearing Jori mention he quit being a shinobi, Zakuro stared at him in mild surprise.  "Retire from being a shinobi?  I guess wanting to stop killing is natural based on your story, but it seems a bit strange to me.  Still, owning your own bar seems pretty nice.  I'll make sure to stop by sometime."  Zakuro downed the remainder of his cup and set it on the ground between them.  "So if you are already part of the village and have a home, what are you doing way out here?"
